The Clock Ticks Down
(Newhall, CA - August 20, 2008) Under the lights: A gala event will take place on Friday evening (8/29) -- the annual intra-squad scrimmage at Harry Welch Stadium (CHS) will showcase the talents of the new-look Grizzlies football team. By all appearances, this year's Grizzlies team will be the toughest in the short history of the school.
In a conversation last night between Head Coach Steve Pinkston and Grizzlies Booster Club President Greg Sutalo it was revealed that the varsity Grizzlies starters this year will actually have game experience at the high school level exceeding that of any other Foothill League squad.
Last year it was the Grizzlies offense that shined, startling the conference coaches on the way to becoming one of the top offensive squads in the Foothill League. This year the Grizzlies defense appears poised to impress the league as the most improved unit.
All elements of the Grizzlies football program appear to have reached new highs as the Fall 2008 season approaches. Will the "talent drain" of supporting two new high school teams (in the future this is expected to become three with the anticipated opening of the new Castaic High School) affect the juggernaut Foothill League squads this year? Or will the talent now being generated by the relatively new Gold Coast Youth Football League play lift the Foothill League to new levels of competition?
These questions and more will be answered by this years football season, and Friday night's 7:00 PM scrimmage at Canyon will be the first opportunity to see what the new season might have in store for Grizzlies fans!
The Fall season's first game (in game zero week) is less than one week later, Thursday Sept. 4th (JV: Friday Sept. 5th).
Highlights from the night of champions include:
Strongest Man = Mike Marshall 1550 lbs. lifted
Pound for Pound Strongest = Joseph Figueroa 718% over body weight
Records: Mike Marshall - Bench 300, Squat 475, Clean 245. 1000 lbs Club (bench, squat, clean)
Big improvements from top to bottom.
On a Scale of 1 to 10, Be An 11!
